Josephine Kaaniru is a Research Associate at Strathmore University Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT) in Nairobi, where she researches the governance of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence policy, data governance and digital public infrastructure. Her work focuses on how regulatory frameworks and technological design shape human participation and wellbeing within digital ecosystems.
Since 2022, she has researched AI and data governance trends in Africa, risks in automated decision-making systems, accessibility and technological exclusion of persons with disabilities, and gender bias in AI and digital public infrastructure. Her work engages policymakers, regulators and civil society actors on emerging governance challenges, with a focus on ensuring that AI and data-driven technologies are developed and deployed in ways that are inclusive, accountable and responsive to African social contexts.
