Data Protection Introductory Course for Organisations and Practitioners in Kenya
The Introductory Data Protection Course by the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT) at Strathmore University is an online course designed to introduce participants to data protection concepts and practical compliance requirements, with a particular focus on Kenya’s data protection laws and their application by organisations and practitioners.
As of May 2026, CIPIT has successfully trained eight cohorts, with over eight thousand participants completing the course. The programme has supported career growth and professional development, equipping participants with skills relevant to data governance, compliance, and data protection roles across sectors.
The Course aims to:
Introduce participants to key concepts and terminology used in data protection laws globally.
Provide an in-depth understanding of the legal basis, scope, and application of Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019 and its regulations.
Prepare participants to implement and comply with the technical and organisational measures required under the Data Protection Act, 2019.
Equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to serve as, or support the work of, a Data Protection Officer (DPO).
Equip participants with an understanding of how emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, interact with data protection principles.
Enable learners to understand how data protection is approached globally and how Kenya’s framework fits within this wider international context
Course Structure
Part I introduces participants to data protection in Kenya. It explains what data protection is and why it matters in Kenya. It also takes participants through the legal aspects of data processing and the rights of a data subject.
Part II builds on the legal issues by taking participants through the technical and organisational requirements under the Data Protection Act. This part of the course also covers the role and functions of a data protection officer.
Part III examines how data protection has been applied in practice. It identifies how Kenya’s data protection laws have been applied to emerging technologies and real scenarios in Kenya. It offers a global perspective on data protection, including comparative insights from other jurisdictions and their implications for organisations and practitioners operating domestically and internationally.
The course also includes:
A glossary of data protection terms, defining key concepts used throughout the programme.
A list of reading materials.
The Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property (AI and IP) Training is a half-day capacity-building programme offered by the IP and Innovation team at CIPIT. The training is designed to equip participants with a practical and policy-relevant understanding of how artificial intelligence intersects with intellectual property law.
Delivered as an interactive online session, the training examines emerging legal and regulatory questions arising from the use of AI in creative and innovative processes. It explores both the challenges and opportunities that AI presents for intellectual property systems, with a focus on applications affecting creators, developers, innovators, policymakers, and legal practitioners.
The AI and IP Training is delivered on an announcement basis. For updates on upcoming sessions, you are encouraged to subscribe to the CIPIT newsletter. For further enquiries, please contact cipit@strathmore.edu
