5 years later, CIPIT remains the only University-based research centre on intellectual property and information technology law anywhere in East and Central Africa. CIPIT’s Mission is to study, create, and share knowledge on the development of intellectual property and information technology, especially as they contribute to African Law and Human Rights. Since its launch and inaugural event in August 2012, CIPIT has continued to be an innovative centre for evidence-based research and training in intellectual property and information technology law and policy.

CIPIT’s key projects include its IP Clinic, Patent Drafting Course as well as research and training on IP and ICT law both within the country and beyond. As a research centre, CIPIT continues to make groundbreaking and meaningful contributions to knowledge and scholarship. CIPIT is a member of several key pan-African and international partnership networks where CIPIT members collaborate on a range of research projects. CIPIT members have authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, reports and working papers based on original research. Future publications include two books on IP law and ICT law respectively.
In addition to it’s award-winning blog, CIPIT has produced several leading online open source resources such as the Africa ICT Policy Database, the Trade Marks Database, the Granted Patents Database and a repository of IP decisions from courts, tribunals and other bodies in Kenya. This year, CIPIT commenced work on a new platform for innovators (www.create.africa) that is intended to connect these creators, inventors and entrepreneurs to experts and investors. In addition, CIPIT is also spearheading the establishment of the first open makerspace by a private university in Kenya.
