PROTECTING KENYAN CHILDREN ONLINE: KEY INDUSTRY GUIDELINES

The Child Online Protection & Safety Guidelines issued by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) are industry regulatory guidelines aimed at safeguarding children’s experience online.

Rooted in the principle that child protection is everyone’s responsibility and that the best interest of the child must be a primary consideration, the guidelines require companies to:

  • Publish a corporate child online safety policy
  • Adopt safety and data protection-by-design principles
  • Deploy age verification mechanisms
  • Use heightened default privacy settings
  • Ensure terms explicitly prohibit the sharing of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM)
  • Designate a focal point for safety issues.

The objective is to minimize exposure to online risks, foster the development of appropriate and productive content, and establish clear processes for reporting and removing inappropriate material.
