The State of AI in Africa Report

The State of AI in Africa Report

The 2nd edition of the State of AI in Africa Report by the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT) at Strathmore University provides a detailed analysis of the progress, challenges, and emerging trends in artificial intelligence (AI) across the African continent. Building on the findings of the 2023 State of AI in Africa Report and following discussions from the 2nd Conference on the State of AI in Africa, this edition offers updated insights into Africa’s evolving AI landscape.

Reflecting a mapping of AI in Africa, the report is structured into four key thematic areas:

  • AI and Data Governance: Examining open data, data sovereignty, and indigenous knowledge systems.

  • AI Innovation and Infrastructure: Highlighting advancements in local startups, investments, and capacity-building initiatives.

  • Practical AI Applications: Exploring AI’s impact in agriculture, health, legal services, and the creative industry.

  • Responsible AI Policies: Assessing continental, national strategies and the growth of the AI governance landscape for ethical and inclusive AI development.

This report serves as a critical resource for understanding Africa’s AI ecosystem, its opportunities, and the persistent gaps. Drawing insights into the continent’s regional and global positioning, the report lends an African and human rights lens, tracing the mold of a context-sensitive, inclusive and evolving AI ecosystem.
