WHO WE ARE
Overview
The Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT) is a research centre based at Strathmore University. Over the years, CIPIT has positioned itself as a thought leader in the evolving fields of law, technology, and innovation across Africa. We conduct evidence-based research on issues at the intersection of law, technology, and innovation in Africa. Our work spans across key thematic areas, including Intellectual Property, Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance and Policy, Cyber Law and Policy, and Digital Identity.
Background
Since its inception, CIPIT has grown into a leading institution providing evidence-based research, policy recommendations, and capacity-building initiatives that address Africa’s evolving digital ecosystem. Initially founded to advance knowledge in Intellectual Property (IP), CIPIT has broadened its scope to respond to the intersection of law and technology.
Our current research areas cover Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Governance and Policy, Cyber Law and Policy, Digital Identity, and Intellectual Property Law. Across these domains, CIPIT produces academic and applied research, develops training programs, and engages stakeholders in dialogue to inform policy and practice. CIPIT plays a key role in shaping the frameworks that govern technology and innovation in Africa. Through research, stakeholder engagement, and training, CIPIT works to generate insights that inform policymaking and guide responsible innovation.
CIPIT sustains its operations through collaborative research projects with diverse partner organizations.
