Today, the Strathmore Business School played host to a historic Creative Commons (CC) Meeting in Nairobi whose main objective was to formally launch the Creative Commons Kenya Project and the various Project Leads. Other agendas in the meeting include exploring how CC licenses catalyse local content development, discussing how to assist creative sector better assert its presence online, harnessing Open Education Resources (OER) potential to realise Universal Education, along Millennium Development Goals, among many other creative content benefits.
During this meeting, Strathmore’s CIPIT was chosen as Public Lead, Creative Commons Kenya whereas the National Council for Law Reporting (NCLR) was chosen as Legal Lead, Creative Commons Kenya. This blogger is particularly excited by these new developments following the appointments of Mr. Alex Gakuru and Dr. Tobias Schonwetter as CC Africa Regional Coordinators.
In a post this blogger penned several months ago titled: “The Challenge for Creative Commons in Kenya”, it was argued that the success of CC in Kenya would require that the government and the CC Team now in place work hand in hand to raise general consciousness and awareness on issues of licensing in respect to copyright and related rights. Indeed, this is a challenge for all of us IP enthusiasts who are passionate about Intellectual Property (IP) becoming a tool that Kenyans can use for economic growth and prosperity. Therefore we must all feel part and parcel of the newly-created Creative Commons Kenya Team through active support and contribution.

One thing is sure, CC has a great reputation and a lot of good will in Africa, even before people fully understand it #creativecommonskenya
